D. Zisl Slepovitch, a native of Minsk, Belarus (in US since 2008) is a musicologist his primary field of interest being Jewish music in Eastern Europe (Ph.D., Belarusian State Academy of Music,), klezmer, classical, and improvising multi-instrumentalist musician, conductor / music director / music coach, composer, music and Yiddish educator, founding member of critically acclaimed bands Litvakus, Zisl Slepovitch Trio, and Zisl Slepovitch Ensemble. Zisl Slepovitch is the Musician-in-Residence at Fortunoff Video Archive for Holocaust Testimonies at Yale University where he is responsible for producing records and video podcast based on the survivors’ testimonies.
Slepovitch’s multi-faceted theatre work includes production by National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene, Theatre for a New Audience, Teatrul evreiesc de stat (Bucharest), New Yiddish Rep, National Theatre of Belarusian Dramaturgy (Minsk); Off-Broadway: Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish (clarinetist / klezmer soloist, associate conductor, orchestra contractor, and music preparer, 2018-20).
As an educator, Dr. Slepovitch has taught Yiddish language and culture at The New School (New York), has been a guest artist and lecturer at many universities and cultural organizations worldwide, including Juiliiard, NYU, University of Michigan, Brandeis University, Hebrew University (Jerusalem), Austrian Academy of Sciences (Vienna), Sefer Center at Russian Academy of Sciences (Moscow), Eshkolot Project, KlezKanada, and many others. Slepovitch's other notable contributions include Defiance movie, Eternal Echoes CD (Sony Classical), Rejoice with Itzhak Perlman and Cantor Yitzchak Meir Helfgot (PBS), and numerous original scores and arrangements.
