About me
Pianist composer Marilyn Lerner’s work spans the worlds of jazz, creative improvisation, and klezmer. The breadth of her work is considerable framed by her unique voice, always utterly recognizable.
Along with her innovative solo piano work, Lerner has toured with the Queen Mab Trio (with Lori Freedman and Ig Henneman), and the Ig Henneman Sextet across Canada, the U.S. and Europe. She currently performs with her two trios, the Ugly Beauties (Matt Brubeck-cello, Nick Fraser- drums) and in her New York based improvising ensemble with drummer Lou Grassi and bassist Ken Filiano. Ongoing projects include Brass Knuckle Sandwich, an improvising duo with trumpeter Nicole Rampersaud, BREM, with Brodie West, Evan Cartwright and Reg Schwager, Peter Johnston’s See Through Quartet with Karen Ng and Nick Fraser. and The Pieces Broken, a duo with New York guitarist Yoshi Fruchter
Upcoming in 2024 is the completion and release of her Anna Margolin song cycle All Silent Things Speak Today, a collaboration with her partner the late Adrienne Cooper, and the release of a new recording Contents May Shift from the Ugly Beauties.
Lerner accompanies silent film in Toronto for the Silent Revue series, the Toronto Silent Film Festival and TIFF Bell Lightbox.
