Klezmer in Major
Wednesday December 25, 2024 11:15am - 12:30pm EST
There's a large klezmer repertoire that could be said to be in a "major mode", which are sometimes overlooked or considered "less Jewish".
We will share some repertoire and theory in order to:
  • Explore the Hashem Molokh mode in Ashkenazi liturgical nusach, look at the kabbalas shabbos, and show connections to Turkish makams Rast and Mahur, and how they're thought about in Turkish/Ottoman music.
  • Demonstrate that the major tunes in the klezmer repertoire actually come from various different influences, including Ashkenazic liturgical, Hasidic, Western European, Greco-Turkish, and Romanian influences, each of which have their own particular feels and idiomatic modulations
  • Learn "major" tunes in the klezmer repertoire that showcase these diverse influences, especially some weird ones that might modulate in interesting ways.
  • Talk about phrasing and ornamentation, and how to make "major" tunes "sound Jewish"

The Music of German Goldenshteyn
Wednesday December 25, 2024 11:15am - 12:30pm EST
German Goldenshteyn z”l (clarinet) was born in Atek, Bessarabia. Orphaned by World War II, he was sent at age 12 to the Red Army Music School inOdessa. At 15 he joined the Red Army as a musician. He served in the Army for 10 years, and later moved to Mogelev Podolskiy, Ukraine, where he worked for many years with local klezmorim playing at Jewish weddings and other events. In 1994 he immigrated to the US, bringing with him his handwritten transcriptions of over 600 melodies learned throughout his career. Following his immigration he continued to add to his repertoire, and upon his untimely passing in 2006, his collection comprised over 1000 transcriptions. Before German’s arrival, many of these precious melodies were unknown by North American klezmorim. German’s influence on the worldwide klezmer revival has been profound, and he is deeply missed. Join Zilyin and Jeff to learn and play a few of German’s most beautiful contributions. All instruments welcome!
