Musician and ethnographer Michael Alpert takes us on a visit to master Ukrainian-Yiddish cultural treasure and folksmentsh Bronya Sakina (1910-1988), via her traditional artistry in East European Jewish song, dance and down-home cuisine. Thinking about Bronya from the perspectives of music, text, movement, gender and more, we’ll watch video, hear recordings, dream about food, sing a song and explore the traditional Yiddish cultural aesthetics that run through Bronya’s life and art, and their continuing significance for our Yiddishland today
