This talk explores the relatively obscure 1941 study Gesture and Environment, authored by the Argentine Jewish anthropologist David Efron, a student of Franz Boas, the renowned German-Jewish founder of American anthropology. I will discuss the relevance of this work both in its own time and in the broader development of American anthropology, as well as its significance in the current political moment, when scholars are rethinking the historical legacy of Boas and his students.
