How did electricity change Yiddish-speaking New York? This talk illuminates a New-York-centered history of electrification through the lens of Yiddish sources, paying particular attention to how yidishkeyt adapted to electric lights. From the early 1880s through the 1930s, as electric lights went from dazzling spectacles to normal parts of everyday life, New York’s Yiddish speakers were both witness to and participants in the changing technological and cultural world around them. We’ll spotlight inventors, cartoonists, rabbis, columnists, and toddlers of yore to learn how Yiddish speakers reacted when tradition met modernity.
