ABOUT THE STAHLHAMMER ORCHESTRA
The ensemble Stahlhammer Klezmer Classic pass on the tradition from The Stahlhammer orchestra that consisted of Semmy’s grandfather, uncles and friends, and was founded around 1910 in Krasnik, a small town south of Lublin in Poland. The orchestra played traditional Jewish Eastern European music, gave concerts and played at weddings and other parties. Semmy’s grand father Zisel also ran a dance school and a barbershop. After the nazi’s invaded Poland in 1939, all the members of the orchestra except one – Semmy’s father – were deported together with all of Krasnic’s jews to extermination camps. Semmy has brought his grandfathers and uncles old ensemble to life with new members.
